The best screen time apps for iPhone
Quiet Wall ·
Screen time apps do different things: block, pause, compete or empty the room. Eight of them grouped by what they do, with prices from the App Store.
One of the apps below is ours. It is marked as ours, and it is not at the top, because there is no single best screen time app. They do different things, so this list is grouped by what each one does rather than ranked. Every price and platform comes from the app's own App Store page, with the date it was checked.
Start with the one you already have
Screen Time · iPhone, iPad, Mac · Free; built into iOS, iPadOS and macOS
Apple's own, in Settings. Reports time spent in apps and websites, pickups and notifications; gives app categories a daily time allowance and sets schedules for when apps are available.
Worth setting up before paying for anything. It is free, it is already on the phone, and its weekly report shows plainly where the time goes. Its limits are easy to tap past, which is the reason most of the apps below exist.

Apps that block
Opal · iPhone, Mac, Android · Free; subscriptions from $4.99 a week to $99.99 a year
Blocks chosen apps and websites on a schedule, in timed sessions or after daily limits, using Apple's Screen Time API. Shows usage stats, a score and a leaderboard with friends.
Blocking as sessions and schedules, with a score and friends to compete with, which some people find motivating and others find like one more feed.

Freedom · iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, Android, Chrome · Free; Premium from $8.99 a month or $39.99 a year; $199 once
Blocks chosen apps and websites, or the whole internet, during sessions started by hand or on a schedule and synced across devices. Locked Mode stops a running session from being quit.
The one to look at if the problem is the laptop as much as the phone, since sessions sync across every device. Locked Mode is for anyone who knows they would otherwise end the session early.

Jomo · iPhone, Mac · Free; Jomo Plus $5.99 a month, $29.99 a year or $99.99 once
Blocks chosen apps, app categories and websites during focus times you schedule, with optional breaks, and shows screen-time statistics. Uses Apple's Screen Time API.
Schedule-based blocking for iPhone and Mac, with breaks built in so a block is something you plan around rather than fight.

Apps that add a pause
one sec · iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Chrome · Free; one sec pro $6.99 a month, $19.99 a year or $99.99 once
Shows a short pause, such as a breathing animation, before a chosen app or website opens, then lets you decide whether to go on. Can end an app session after a set time.
It does not block anything. It makes you wait a moment before an app opens, and then asks whether you still want it. Good for apps you want to keep but open too often without deciding to.

ScreenZen · iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Windows · Free; optional tips from $5 to $40
Adds a wait before a chosen app opens, which can grow with each open. Sets daily goals per app, and can block apps for set times, after a number of opens or past a Screen Time limit.
The same idea as one sec, with a wait that grows each time, and stricter blocking when a pause is not enough. Free, apart from optional tips.

An app that makes it social
BePresent · iPhone, Android · Free; subscriptions from $3.99 a month
Blocks apps during solo or group sessions, sets daily screen-time limits with an optional money stake, ranks users on weekly leaderboards and gives points for partner rewards.
Screen time as a group activity: sessions with friends, leaderboards, and the option to put money on a daily limit. It suits people who keep promises to others more easily than to themselves.

An app that removes the input (ours)
Quiet Wall · iPhone · Free; Extras $4 a month, $25 a year or $50 once
A timer for doing nothing: a reminder arrives, the phone goes across the room, and a sound ends the session. Each session is logged as a brick on a wall. Extras can block other apps during a session.
Quiet Wall does not manage screen time across the day. It takes ten minutes of it back at a time: a reminder arrives, the phone goes across the room, and you look at a blank wall until a sound brings you back. Most of the apps above take something away. This one gives you the empty gap to use instead.

How to choose
- if you want to see where the time goes: Screen Time, before anything else
- if you want limits you cannot talk yourself out of: one of the blockers
- if you want to keep the apps but open them less: a pause app
- if you want company in it: BePresent
- if you want the gaps back, with nothing in them: Quiet Wall
Several of these work together. A pause app for the feeds, a blocker for working hours, and something for the gaps in between are not in competition with each other.
What is the best screen time app?
It depends on the job. Screen Time is free and built in; Opal, Freedom and Jomo block apps; one sec and ScreenZen add a pause before an app opens.
