How much screen time is too much?
Quiet Wall ·
What the averages are, what official guidelines say and do not say for adults, and a more useful question than a number of hours.
What the averages are
DataReportal's Digital 2025 report put the average time online at 6 hours 38 minutes a day, for internet users aged 16 and over around the world. That counts every device, not only phones. The figure is from late 2024; its newer reports measure differently and cannot be compared with it.
An average is not a limit. It says what is common, not what is good.
What the guidelines say for adults
None of the main health bodies sets a number of hours for adults. The World Health Organization's guidance is to limit time spent sitting, whatever you are doing while you sit. The CDC's guidance for adults says to move more and sit less, and does not mention screens.
So "too much" for an adult is not a figure anyone can look up.
What the guidelines say for children
- the WHO's 2019 guidance for under-fives recommends no screen time for babies under one, and no more than an hour a day for children aged two to four, with less being better
- the American Academy of Pediatrics replaced its fixed daily limits in January 2026 with guidance that looks at children's whole digital world rather than hours alone
A better question than hours
Hours on their own say little. Six hours that include a working day at a laptop are not the same as six hours of feeds. A more useful question is how much of the time you chose.
Signs that it has gone past what you would choose:
- you pick up the phone without deciding to, and notice only once it is in your hand
- it is the last thing you look at at night and the first in the morning
- you cannot get through a film, a meal or a conversation without checking it
- a free minute feels uncomfortable until something is on the screen
Checking your own
The iPhone's own Screen Time shows the daily average and how often you pick the phone up. Pickups are often more telling than hours: they count the reflex, not the reading.
Then try leaving one gap a day empty. If ten minutes without the phone feels hard, that says more about how much is too much than any average.
Ten minutes back
Quiet Wall takes ten minutes of screen time back at a time: a reminder arrives, the phone goes across the room, and you look at a blank wall until a sound brings you back. Nothing to count, nothing to beat.
How much screen time is too much for an adult?
There is no official number for adults. The WHO and CDC say to sit less and move more. A more useful test is how much of the time you chose.
